Fine, I’ll Meet You There

“Would you care to have a drink with me after work?” I said.

“That would be lovely,” she said. “Where and when?”

“Ritz bar, this evening when you get through.”

“Five thirty,” she said.

“I’ll meet you there,” I said.

Excerpt From
Robert B Parker

Big Robert B. fan from decades past, I’m re-reading Valediction, published in 1984, the year I graduated high school. It’s the one when Susan leaves Spencer and goes to San Francisco. Spencer calls a woman he kind of sort of knows and invites her on a date.

Not so strange, right? Only think about the time of day. Who finishes work at 5:30? Admittedly, in the 1980s, I remember my folks generally coming home between 5:30 and 6:00 (except for the time Mom had that 2-hour commute).
